Slovakia’s economic performance has shown signs of deceleration. In June 2026, industrial production grew by 2.1% year-on-year, supported by a 30.8% surge in chemical production and a 6.6% rise in metal and machinery manufacturing, despite a sharp 36.5% decline in the electronics and computer goods sector. During the same period, construction growth reached its slowest June rate in 14 years.

By the second quarter of 2026, overall economic growth slowed to 0.7% or 0.8%, marking the sixth consecutive quarter of growth remaining below 1%. While household consumption, trade, and exports have provided some support, private investments have experienced a double-digit decline. Experts warn that relying on consumption as the primary driver is unsustainable if incomes fail to rise or savings are depleted.

Economic sentiment worsened in August, dropping 4.4 points to a level of 95, driven by a sharp decline in industrial confidence which fell 17 points to -15. Miroslav Štefánik, director of the Economic Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, warned of a potential “downward spiral” if structural issues are not addressed. He noted that while the country benefits from returns on past foreign investments, particularly in the automotive industry, there is insufficient reinvestment. He emphasized that reforms in education and human capital are necessary to counter demographic challenges and maintain competitiveness amid concerns over long-term stagnation.
