Slovak political leaders have engaged in debates regarding the transit of Ukrainian grain and the diplomatic implications of Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár’s visit to Moscow. While officials agreed that grain transit should be permitted to assist Ukraine, they emphasized the need to protect the Slovak domestic market from commodity influx.

Regarding the Moscow visit, opposition parties raised security concerns, alleging the trip might involve negotiating increased Russian diplomatic presence. Minister Blanár dismissed these claims, stating the purpose was to attend a scheduled meeting of the Slovak-Russian commission on economic and scientific-technical cooperation. As the visit proceeded, the focus expanded to include a framework for cooperation in sectors such as energy, nuclear energy, agriculture, and environmental protection. Blanár stated the objective was to maintain contact without creating a ‘new iron curtain’ between the EU and Russia, while adhering to EU sanctions.

A critical component of the discussions involves Slovakia’s energy security, specifically regarding potential requirements to end Russian gas imports by September of the following year. Current contracts with the state-owned Slovak Gas Industry (SPP) include ‘take or pay’ conditions that could lead to compensation claims exceeding 10 billion euros if not met.

A Slovak government delegation, led by Blanár and including State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy Vladimír Šimoňák, has arrived in Moscow for the 22nd meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation. Co-chaired by Blanár and Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov, the meeting aims to establish cooperation in six areas: energy, nuclear energy, agriculture, environmental protection, tourism, and sports and culture. Blanár is scheduled to hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
