The Slovak U21 national football team entered a critical phase of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship 2027 qualifiers in Group D. Following a 0-2 home loss to Ireland in Košice, where Thomas Lonergan scored in the 2nd minute and Sean Grehan added a second in the 57th minute, Slovakia’s lead over Ireland narrowed to two points. Despite Mário Marcelli missing a penalty in the 29th minute, the result kept Slovakia in second place, securing a spot in the play-offs.

The team has since shifted focus to a high-stakes qualifying match against England at the bet365 Stadium in Stoke City. Slovakia faces a significant challenge against the current European champions, who lead Group D.

Preparation for the England match has been impacted by injuries to defender Michal Svoboda and Patrik Dula, who are sidelined with muscle issues. To bolster the squad, Mario Sauer, Hugo Pavek, and Samuel Gidi have been added as reinforcements. Assistant coach Tibor Goljan noted that the team must deliver “extraordinary performances” to compete, emphasizing that every goal will be vital in such a difficult group.
