Small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors are emerging as a significant trend in nuclear energy production. These reactors are smaller and less powerful than conventional plants, typically capped at 300 megawatts, but offer greater flexibility and potential cost savings through mass production.

While much of the technology is still in development, some applications are already operational. In Russia, the Akademik Lomonosov, a floating nuclear power plant in Pevek, has been in service since May 2020. In the private sector, companies like NuScale and Oklo are developing next-generation technologies, with commercial deployment expected in the early 2030s or late 2020s.

In Poland, Synthos Green Energy (SGE) is advancing the commercialization of BWRX-300 technology through significant capital injections. A group of prominent Polish entrepreneurs is investing approximately 500 million PLN into the project, supported by approximately 400 million EUR from international partners including GE Vernova.

By late 2026, the industry is seeing increased regulatory activity in the United States. Holtec International has advanced its nuclear construction permit application for the Palisades site in Michigan by submitting a Preliminary Safety Analysis Report to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This filing concerns two SMR-300 reactors, designated Pioneer 1 and Pioneer 2, intended to provide 680 megawatts of power.

Additionally, Terrestrial Energy has proposed a new regulatory model to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for its Thermal and Electric Facility. This bifurcated approach suggests that non-nuclear components, such as turbines, could be built under standard commercial codes while the nuclear module undergoes traditional licensing. This strategy aims to reduce capital risks and construction timelines, with a potential site identified at the US Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
