Cuba is expanding its use of photovoltaic energy to address a severe electricity crisis characterized by daily blackouts and fuel shortages.

In Havana, authorities are working to regulate a surge of solar panel installations on residential rooftops. While the Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment, Armando Rodríguez Batista, called the trend a “historic opportunity,” officials are establishing safety standards and technical criteria to protect building integrity. To support this, the government has introduced incentives, such as Resolution 114, which allows citizens to receive payment for electricity injected into the national grid.

Efforts to implement solar power have also moved into public infrastructure. In Santa Clara, the Augusto César Sandino baseball stadium has begun installing panels to provide power for the Leopardos de Villa Clara. This project follows smaller-scale implementations at other venues, such as Havana’s La Polar football stadium, as the country seeks alternatives to mitigate the impact of ungenerated capacity caused by fuel scarcity.
