Data from the European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter spacecraft has provided new insights into the mechanisms driving solar wind and magnetic structures.

Initial findings from the Solar Orbiter’s Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) identified high-frequency magnetic waves in the Sun’s polar coronal regions. These waves, which were detected at a much higher frequency than previously recorded by older instruments, suggest that vibrations may accelerate solar wind particles to speeds of hundreds of kilometers per second and transport significantly more energy than earlier models estimated.

Subsequent research utilized the spacecraft to trace the origin of ‘switchbacks’—S-shaped kinks in the solar wind—directly to the Sun. By analyzing the chemical composition of particles within a large switchback, researchers found evidence supporting the ‘interchange reconnection’ theory. This theory posits that magnetic field lines with different properties interact and snap open, releasing trapped plasma. While reconnection appears to be the primary formation process, observations also indicated that waves and turbulence likely influence these structures once they move away from the Sun.
