Recent scientific research indicates that the Sun may be capable of producing superflares, which are massive plasma eruptions releasing energy equivalent to trillions of hydrogen bombs. While such events have been observed on other sun-like stars, they have not been directly recorded in the 70 years of modern satellite observation.

A study led by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center suggests that Earth’s vulnerability to solar storms may be higher than previously estimated, noting that the effects on satellites, communications, and navigation signals may increase without a known upper limit.

Further analysis from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research and the University of Colorado, published in Philosophical Transactions A, utilized patterns from hundreds of flares and historical data to test the Sun’s outer limits. By analyzing data from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory collected between 2010 and 2016, researchers identified a statistical correlation where flare energy scales exponentially with the area of solar ‘Active Regions’ (sunspots).

Researchers determined that the largest sunspot group ever recorded, appearing in April 1947, could have theoretically produced a flare up to 100 times more powerful than any directly measured by humans. If a superflare were to occur, it could release energy exceeding 10^34 ergs, making it more than ten times the intensity of the 1859 Carrington Event. While these findings do not claim a superflare occurred in 1947, they highlight the potential risks extreme solar activity poses to global technology, power grids, the ionosphere, and radio communications.
