Astrophysical research has raised questions regarding the long-term stability of the solar system. Studies published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters suggest that as the Sun transitions into a white dwarf, mass ejections could trigger a “dynamical instability.”

Supercomputer models and numerical simulations indicate that these “stochastic kicks” or asymmetric mass ejections could cause chaotic gravitational disturbances. Researchers found that in 96 percent of 762 tested scenarios, this process leads to a “violent scattering” that could potentially eject outer planets into interstellar space or destroy gas giants within a billion years of the Sun’s collapse.
