# Sony discontinuation of standalone 4K UHD Blu-ray players > Live situation record from CLSTR: https://clstr.news/situations/sony-discontinuation-of-standalone-4k-uhd-blu-ray-players > Updated: 2026-10-24T23:06:01.000Z. Sources: 20. Developments: 2. Sony has officially ceased the production and shipment of its final standalone 4K UHD Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, in the Japanese market. The model is currently listed as out of stock on Sony’s official Japanese website with no successor announced. This move leaves the PlayStation 5 (disc version) as the only remaining Sony hardware capable of playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs in Japan. However, enthusiasts have noted that the PS5 lacks certain high-end features present in dedicated players, such as Dolby Vision support for movie playback and dedicated dual HDMI outputs for audio/video separation. The discontinuation reflects a broader industry trend toward digital streaming and away from physical media. While the high-end 4K UHD segment remains a niche market for audiophiles and cinephiles seeking high bit-rate video and lossless audio formats, mass-market demand for physical discs has declined. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-24: Sony ceases production of last 4K Blu-ray player in Japan Sony has discontinued its last standalone 4K UHD Blu-ray player in Japan, leaving the PlayStation 5 as the only remaining Sony device capable of playing 4K discs in the region. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/sony-ceases-production-of-last-4k-blu-ray-player-in-japan ### 2026-10-22: Sony ends shipments of last standalone 4K UHD Blu-ray player in Japan Sony has stopped shipments of its last standalone 4K UHD Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, in Japan, leaving the PS5 as its only remaining UHD disc playback option. 16 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/sony-ends-shipments-of-standalone-4k-blu-ray-players-in-japan --- Cite as: Sony discontinuation of standalone 4K UHD Blu-ray players.
