Sources: 40. Developments: 2. Sony has introduced new measures and hardware variations for the PlayStation 5 in the Japanese market. To manage high demand and mitigate scalping, Sony implemented a lottery system for the PlayStation 5 Pro. To qualify for the lottery, applicants must have a Japanese PlayStation Online Services account and have recorded at least 60 hours of gameplay on a PS5 or PS4 between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. Sony also announced a Japan-exclusive ‘Midnight Black’ color variation for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. Scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, the model will be available for 55,000 yen, with a matching detachable disc drive priced at 11,980 yen. Pre-orders for these items are set to begin on October 20. The launch of this console is noted to coincide with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. The Midnight Black Digital Edition includes a matching DualSense wireless controller and retains standard performance features such as an ultra-high-speed SSD and 3D audio. Due to regional specifications, the model is strictly region-locked to the Japanese market. It requires the system language to be set to Japanese and necessitates a PlayStation Network account registered in Japan. Consequently, users in other regions, such as Hong Kong, will be unable to use existing accounts or transfer game data to this specific version. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino stated that these regional restrictions are intended to combat the trend of consoles being exported from Japan to other markets due to currency fluctuations. The company aims to use these restrictions to offer a more accessible price point to “revitalize the domestic gaming market.” ## Timeline ### 2026-10-13: Sony announces Japan-exclusive Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition Sony announced a Japan-exclusive Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition launching November 19, 2026, for 55,000 yen.
