South Africa has repatriated more than 80 sets of human remains to Namibia, including 84 ancestral remains and the remains of two Namibian political prisoners, Festus Nehale and Simon Niilenge, who died while incarcerated on Robben Island during the apartheid era.

The handover ceremony took place at the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town. South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie described the repatriation as an act of “restorative justice, dignity and healing.”

Upon arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, the remains were received by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. The President characterized the repatriation as an act of restoration for the “dignity, identity, and belonging of the Namibian people.” The remains of the liberation struggle heroes are scheduled to be reburied during Namibia’s “Heroes’ Day” ceremonies.
