# South American digital infrastructure expansion > Live situation record from CLSTR: https://clstr.news/situations/south-american-digital-infrastructure-expansion > Updated: 2026-09-29T16:40:33.000Z. Sources: 14. Developments: 2. The expansion of digital infrastructure in South America is being driven by the global demand for artificial intelligence. In Colombia, the sector is seeing a surge in demand with 25 operational data centers and nine major projects under development. This includes a planned US$1.3 billion hyperscale campus in Tenjo, Cundinamarca, which has raised concerns regarding the impact on local energy grids, water supplies, and land use. In Peru, the data center market is projected to reach US$6.7 billion by 2030, with a significant portion dedicated to AI processing. Experts suggest that mineral-producing nations like Peru are positioned as strategic partners in this digital economy due to the heavy requirement for physical resources such as copper, steel, and aluminum. As Harvard Senior Fellow Vinio Floris noted, “The cloud is not immaterial. Without mining, there is no AI.” ## Timeline ### 2026-09-29: Peru positioned as strategic partner for US$6.7 billion data center market Global data center investment is expected to reach US$6.7 billion by 2030, driven by AI.
