In South Korea, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has initiated a 14-month conceptual study to define requirements for a future fighter. The project, supported by a 900 million won budget, explores design paths such as tailless configurations and focuses on technologies like adaptive-cycle engines, broadband radar-absorbent coatings, and artificial intelligence for manned-unmanned teaming. Similarly, India is targeting sixth-generation development as part of a long-term strategy to bolster indigenous defense capabilities. The Indian government is emphasizing electronic warfare, drones, and autonomous systems. While the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program remains the primary focus, with a prototype flight expected in September 2028, the nation is also opening aircraft manufacturing to the private sector to support these technological goals. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-29: India targets sixth-generation fighter jet development India is developing sixth-generation fighter jets and indigenous electronics to bolster defence, while the government weighs foreign fifth-generation jet purchases to address current capability gaps. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/india-targets-sixth-generation-fighter-jet-development ### 2026-08-30: South Korea launches study for sixth-generation fighter South Korea has initiated a 14-month study to develop a sixth-generation fighter, exploring stealth designs, AI integration, and manned-unmanned teaming to advance its domestic aerospace capabilities. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/south-korea-launches-study-for-sixth-generation-fighter --- Cite as: South Korea and India sixth-generation fighter development.
