South Korean officials and regional leaders are focusing on expanding railway infrastructure to support housing and regional development. Initially, the government emphasized accelerating the completion of the three GTX lines (A, B, and C) to create synergy with large-scale housing rollouts in Gyeonggi Province and shorten commutes to Seoul.

Efforts to influence the upcoming 5th National Railway Network Plan (2026–2035) have intensified. In Incheon, Mayor Park Chan-dae and National Assembly member Kim Kyo-heung have advocated for the extension of the Daejang-Hongdae Line to Cheongna, as well as the inclusion of the GTX-D (Y-line) and GTX-E lines. While these aim to improve Seoul access, concerns have emerged regarding potential overlap in demand and service areas, which may impact how the government prioritizes these high-cost projects.

In Gwangmyeong, local officials and residents are campaigning for the Sincheon-Haan-Sillim Line. This proposed route would connect Siheung Sincheon Station to Seoul’s Doksan and Sillim areas to mitigate traffic congestion expected from the Gwangmyeong Siheung 3rd Generation New Town and Techno Valley developments. Proponents are suggesting private investment models to speed up construction.

Simultaneously, 16 lawmakers from the Chungcheong region have submitted a joint proposal seeking six key projects, including the extension of the GTX-C line to Cheonan and Asan, to support a ‘Chungcheong Mega City.’ The government is expected to release the draft of the 5th National Railway Network Plan in the second half of 2026, with a final announcement anticipated in November.
