Research published in the journal Nature indicates that exotic conifer species from the Northern Hemisphere exhibit accelerated growth and increased drought resilience when planted in the Southern Hemisphere, specifically in regions like Patagonia. 

By analyzing growth rings across 192 sites globally, researchers from institutions including the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity and CONICET found that these trees can grow up to four times faster than in their native habitats. This phenomenon is attributed to the absence of specialized pests, pathogens, and herbivores found in their original environments. Because these trees do not need to allocate energy toward biological defenses, they can direct nutrients toward rapid development and accumulate higher reserves of sugars and starches, which aids photosynthesis during water stress.

Despite these growth advantages, scientists caution against relying on exotic species for reforestation or climate change mitigation. Experts warn that introducing non-native species can negatively impact local biodiversity and lead to invasive species issues, emphasizing the necessity of protecting native flora such as Nothofagus forests.
