David Ferrer announced he will step down as the captain of Spain’s Davis Cup team at the end of the 2026 season. Citing ‘purely personal’ reasons, Ferrer will conclude his tenure following the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, Italy, rather than fulfilling his contract through 2027.

The Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) has appointed Marc López to succeed Ferrer. López, a former doubles specialist, Olympic gold medalist, and world number three in doubles, is scheduled to begin a three-season term on January 1, 2027, serving through 2029.

López has been serving as a technical assistant for the national team since the 2025 Davis Cup qualifiers. He will continue in this assistant capacity under Ferrer during the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, scheduled for November 24 to 29, 2026, before officially assuming full command.
