The Spanish and United States women’s national football teams are engaged in a two-match friendly series in the United States, serving as preparation for the 2027 World Cup.

In the first match held at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., Spain defeated the United States 2-0. Spain, currently ranked first in the FIFA rankings, took an early lead in the third minute via a long-distance strike by Patri Guijarro. Eva Navarro doubled the advantage in the 14th minute following a cross from Salma Paralluelo.

Despite the loss, the United States maintained offensive pressure, recording 10 shots on target compared to Spain's three. The match included a disallowed goal by Sophia Wilson due to an offside ruling and a penalty save by Spanish goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares against Lily Yohannes. In stoppage time, Spain's Athenea del Castillo received a red card following a VAR review for pulling the hair of American player Michelle Cooper.

Both teams entered the match facing roster challenges due to injuries. The United States was without Naomi Girma and Sam Coffey, while Spain was missing Aitana Bonmatí, Clàudia Pina, and Mapi León. US coach Emma Hayes described the series as “essential preparation” and noted that while the team created numerous chances, they lacked the “clinical finishing required to compete with the world champions.”

The teams are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday in Chester, Pennsylvania.
