Cultural and literary initiatives across Europe are commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War.

In Italy, events in Genoa and Modena focus on international antifascism and the historical impact of the conflict. These include lectures, documentaries on Italian volunteers, and participatory workshops centered on Pablo Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ to reflect on the chaos of war.

In Spain and Portugal, commemorations include literary works that provide day-by-day recreations of the conflict, as well as exhibitions such as ‘1936-1939: Espanha fraturada’ in Portugal. This exhibition utilizes propaganda posters and library collections to examine ideological fractures and the war’s lasting influence on Spanish and European identity.

Recent activities in Seville include the ‘Letras en Sevilla’ conference series organized by the Cajasol Foundation. The program has featured various Spanish ministers and public figures with differing political views, aiming to foster reasoned debate on the sensitive topic. Additionally, author José Ángel Mañas has utilized the Zenda platform to recreate the daily events of 1936, specifically highlighting the historical impact of Robert Capa’s photograph ‘The Falling Militiaman’, which captured the death of Federico Borrell in Córdoba.
