Spain is facing economic challenges characterized by a widening wealth gap and a decline in global economic standing. While Spanish net wealth per inhabitant rose by 29% since before COVID-19, this growth lags behind the 37% increase recorded across the eurozone. This disparity is attributed to stagnant real wages and rising living costs, as inflation reached 4.3% in August, the highest increase since February 2023.

IMF data indicates Spain’s global economic rank has fallen to 14th, down from 12th in 2025 and 8th in 2004. Despite this loss of global influence, the McKinsey Global Institute’s ‘Imbalance and Divergence: The Global Balance 2026’ report notes that Spanish household wealth reached 11 trillion dollars (approximately 9.45 trillion euros) in 2025. This growth, which includes a 6% nominal increase in net wealth per capita, places Spain among the fastest-growing domestic economies alongside Poland, Ireland, and Sweden. However, 58% of the global increase in household wealth was attributed to the revaluation of existing assets driven by inflation.

Recent data from the Spanish Tax Agency highlights a growing concentration of wealth at the top. Since 2013, the number of individuals declaring a net worth exceeding 30 million euros has more than doubled, rising from 471 to 865 in 2023. This surge in ultra-wealthy taxpayers, alongside legislative changes to prevent tax exemptions, resulted in a record wealth tax collection of 2,153.7 million euros in the 2024 fiscal year, a 9.3% increase from the previous year.
