The Spanish defense sector is implementing several initiatives to modernize and maintain its naval fleet. Indra has secured a contract to provide maintenance and life-cycle engineering for the Aegis combat system and sensors on F-100 Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates to support NATO, EU, and national missions.

Additionally, Navantia is set to begin construction of two new Maritime Action Vessels (BAM 7 and 8) at its Puerto Real shipyard in early 2027, a program valued at 716 million euros. To support ongoing operations, the Spanish Council of Ministers has authorized 80 million euros for the maintenance and obsolescence management of surface vessels and Galerna-class submarines through the end of 2029.

This modernization effort is part of a broader industrial expansion. The Spanish government has authorized 1,483 million euros to fund 14 Special Modernization Programs (PEM), which have the potential to mobilize up to 32,000 million euros through 2032. These programs target strategic areas including naval capabilities, combat aviation, missile systems, and secure communications.

In response, major companies are scaling operations. Indra is expanding its footprint with a new military vehicle factory in As Pontes, while Urovesa is investing over 50 million euros to expand facilities in Galicia. Navantia has also launched a tender for a three-year framework agreement to calibrate measurement and monitoring equipment at its centers in Cartagena and San Fernando.
