A new collective agreement for 2026–2028 has been established between the Confederación Empresarial Veterinaria Española (CEVE) and various unions, mandating annual salary increases of 4% and including inflation-linked revision clauses. Concurrently, the Spanish Congress is reviewing recommendations from the Organización Colegial Veterinaria (OCV) regarding taxation, professional specialization, and the ‘One Health’ approach. Reflecting this integration into public health, Fernando Simón, director of the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), stated that veterinarians constitute approximately 43% of Spain’s public health workforce and 25% of the CCAES team. Simón highlighted their critical role in food protection and the fight against zoonoses, noting that the sector has achieved a reduction of over 70% in antibiotic use through the National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-05: Veterinarians comprise 43% of Spain's public health workforce Fernando Simón reports that veterinarians make up roughly 43% of Spain's public health professionals and have led a 70% reduction in antibiotic use in the veterinary sector. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/veterinarians-comprise-43-of-spains-public-health-workforce ### 2026-09-21: Spain veterinary sector updates labor agreements and parliamentary reports Spain's veterinary sector faces new labor regulations with 4% annual salary increases through 2028 and ongoing parliamentary discussions regarding taxation and professional recognition. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/spain-veterinary-sector-updates-labor-agreements-and-parliamentary-reports --- Cite as: Spanish veterinary sector labor and public health role.
