Sports development in Kalamata has progressed through both organizational restructuring and infrastructure upgrades. In September 2026, Kalamata Basket was officially launched following the merger of Kalamata ’80 and Kalamata BC, aiming to compete in the National League 2 with a roster combining local talent and experienced athletes.

By October 2026, the city focused on facility improvements, inaugurating the renovated Indoor Gymnasium of the Kalamata Municipal Stadium. The facility, now dedicated to volleyball, features new Taraflex flooring and an electronic scoreboard. Mayor Thanasis Vasilopoulos indicated that these upgrades are part of a broader priority to support local clubs and host international competitions, including the 2026 Balkan Men’s Volleyball Championship. Additional municipal projects are planned for new gymnasiums and a large sports center in Paliambela.
