The municipality of Piraeus has engaged in various initiatives to promote and improve local sports infrastructure and culture.

In early October 2026, the city hosted a three-day Sports and Olympic Festival. Co-organized with the Mani Association and supported by the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, the event featured athletics, meetings with Greek Olympians, and an exhibition of 44 authentic Olympic torches. Participants engaged in various sports activities, including basketball, judo, rowing, taekwondo, and gymnastics.

Following this event, plans were announced for a significant investment exceeding 15.8 million euros to upgrade major historical sports facilities. Deputy Minister of Sports Giannis Vroutsis announced that the Petros Kapageroff Indoor Swimming Pool will receive 3.29 million euros for energy efficiency and structural reinforcement. Furthermore, the Petros Kapageroff Indoor Gymnasium, which has been closed since 2008, is slated for a 12.6 million euro reconstruction funded by the Attica Region, with an expected reopening in the summer of 2027.

In addition to these major projects, the municipality has conducted smaller-scale facility improvements, such as replacing all ceiling lighting fixtures at the P. Salpea Indoor Gymnasium. The city has also worked to improve public spaces by removing inactive robotic waste collection systems, specifically the “palm-bin,” from the Pasalimani area.
