A controversy has emerged regarding newly appointed Springboks captain Andre Esterhuizen following reports of a 2012 incident in which he was found guilty of using a racial slur. The incident, which reportedly resulted in a one-year suspension during his time at Klerksdorp High, has led to significant social media criticism regarding head coach Rassie Erasmus’s decision to appoint him as captain. South African rugby officials have attempted to limit media coverage of the matter, instructing journalists to restrict inquiries to on-field issues ahead of a Test match against the Wallabies. During a press conference, officials intervened to prevent reporters from questioning Esterhuizen directly about the past transgression. The situation has expanded into a broader public debate involving media personalities. Radio host Anele Mdoda faced backlash and calls for a boycott of her show after publicly calling for Esterhuizen to be banned from rugby. Other public figures have also joined the discussion, criticizing the silence of SA Rugby regarding the allegations. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: Anele Mdoda faces backlash over Andre Esterhuizen comments Anele Mdoda faces boycott calls after demanding Springbok Andre Esterhuizen be banned over alleged past racial slurs, while also discussing her views on financial independence in relationships. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/anele-mdoda-faces-backlash-over-andre-esterhuizen-comments ### 2026-09-26: Springboks block questions on Andre Esterhuizen racial slur controversy The Springboks have refused to answer questions regarding a 2012 racial slur incident involving new captain Andre Esterhuizen ahead of their Test match against the Wallabies. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/springboks-block-questions-on-andre-esterhuizen-racial-slur-controversy --- Cite as: Springboks captaincy racial slur controversy.
