In late August 2026, the Sri Lankan Transport Ministry announced plans to modernize the railway system by launching an online season ticket platform for private sector employees in September. By mid-September, tensions escalated as joint railway trade unions, including the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Association, confirmed a two-day token strike for September 17 and 18. The industrial action is a protest against administrative issues, specifically the demand for the removal of the General Manager of Railways. Despite meetings with the Ministry of Transport, unions rejected requests for more time to resolve the leadership dispute, citing a two-year lack of confidence in current management and widespread service shortcomings.

The 48-hour strike, involving 26 unions including drivers, controllers, and station masters, commenced at midnight on September 16. The dispute was partially influenced by a disciplinary letter issued against Kasun Chamara Jayasekara, General Secretary of the Station Masters’ Association, which the Ministry of Transport subsequently suspended. 

To minimize commuter inconvenience, the Railway Department reported that most office trains continued to operate on scheduled routes across the Coastal, Chilaw/Puttalam, Main, Northern, and Kelani Valley lines. However, some passengers reported difficulties due to cancelled journeys and closed ticket counters. Union leaders maintained that the strike would continue until midnight on the 18th, asserting the movement is intended to strengthen the department rather than serve political interests.
