Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has seen a significant increase in visitor volume in 2026, with arrivals surpassing 1.5 million. India, the United Kingdom, and China have emerged as the primary source markets. This surge in demand has led several airlines, including Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, and Jetstar, to launch or expand services, while major carriers like Emirates and Qatar Airways have increased flight frequencies.

Despite the rise in arrivals, the country is facing a disconnect between visitor numbers and total revenue. July revenues reportedly fell 10.4% compared to the previous year due to lower visitor spending. Consequently, authorities have revised their 2026 targets, reducing the annual arrival goal from 3 million to 2.7 million and lowering the revenue target from $5 billion to $4.2 billion.

To address these challenges, the government is launching a 1.5 billion LKR digital promotion campaign. To further revitalize the industry, the World Bank is providing a $200 million concessional loan. An initial $77 million will fund the ‘Thrive Colombo’ project, which aims to transform the capital into a high-value destination by increasing visitor stay times and spending. Subsequent operations will focus on nature-based and marine tourism.

Efforts to attract foreign capital continue, highlighted by growing engagement from the Japanese market. Recent arrivals include large groups of over 200 Japanese tourists and investors, signaling interest in the country’s wellness, cultural, and hospitality sectors.
