Researchers at the SLAC-Stanford Battery Center have found that the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles (EVs) may be up to 38 percent longer than current industry projections. 

Lead author Simona Onori noted that traditional laboratory testing methods, which rely on constant discharge and recharge rates, do not accurately reflect actual usage. In contrast, real-world driving—characterized by frequent acceleration, braking, short stops, and periods of rest—appears to benefit battery health. This suggests that dynamic driving patterns and intermittent usage may contribute to increased longevity rather than degradation.

Additionally, technical insights indicate that 12-volt batteries remain essential in EVs to stabilize onboard networks, power control units, and activate safety systems required to engage the high-voltage battery.
