Paramount is developing a complete cinematic reboot of the Star Trek franchise. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein confirmed at SDCC 2026 that the production will feature an entirely new cast of characters, moving away from established figures such as Kirk or Spock. The narrative is intended to explore the institution of Starfleet and is designed so that viewers do not require extensive knowledge of previous installments to understand the story.

Subsequent details revealed that the film will move away from the Kelvin timeline and will feature “no legacy characters.” While the creators noted the story will not be nihilistic, they described the project as “probably our darkest film that we’ve ever written,” emphasizing a serious tone set further into the future.
