Thomas Fahmy, a 24-year-old congressional staffer for U.S. Representative Nicole Malliotakis, survived a direct lightning strike on Staten Island, New York, on August 27. The incident occurred while Fahmy was walking toward his vehicle during a storm.

A neighbor’s doorbell camera captured the moment of impact, which caused Fahmy to collapse on the sidewalk. He was assisted by a resident, Stephanie Homan, who called 911. Following the strike, Fahmy reported intense sensations of tingling, numbness, and burning pain.

Fahmy was transported to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital for observation. Although he experienced significant physical sensations, medical examinations revealed no visible burns or serious physical injuries, and he was discharged the following day. Fahmy has since returned to work, describing his survival as a “miracle” and a reminder of the “preciousness of life.”
