The development of the Strait of Messina region continues through national strategic planning and intensified local municipal cooperation.

At the national level, Undersecretary of State Luigi Sbarra has identified the Reggio Calabria port system as a strategic Mediterranean hub. Supported by the Single Special Economic Zone (ZES Unica), which allocated 300 million euros for infrastructure, the initiative aims to attract investment and simplify administration. Between early 2024 and mid-2026, this framework reportedly facilitated significant private investment and job creation in Calabria.

Local efforts to develop the “Oltre lo Stretto” (Beyond the Strait) integrated area have progressed significantly. In mid-October 2026, Mayors Federico Basile of Messina and Francesco Cannizzaro of Reggio Calabria signed a five-year protocol of intent aboard the vessel Elio to establish an Integrated Area of the Strait. This agreement aims to transform the geographical and cultural proximity of the two cities into a shared political and institutional project to boost regional development, coordinating services across a territory of over 200 municipalities and one million inhabitants. A central component is the creation of a Unique Agency for Strait Mobility to coordinate maritime and land transport, improve intermodal connections, and introduce a single travel ticket.

Senator Tilde Minasi of the Lega party expressed support, stating the alliance will be promoted in Parliament to provide the “necessary legislative tools for this new metropolitan reality.” She further emphasized that the Strait Bridge remains the central infrastructure required to connect the two shores.

However, the initiative faces local scrutiny. While commuter groups have cited reduced connection alternatives, officials in Villa San Giovanni, led by Mayor Giusy Caminiti, argue that formal recognition of the Integrated Area is insufficient without national legislation to ensure territorial continuity. They are calling for reduced transit tariffs to facilitate the movement of students, workers, and goods.
