Architecture students in Siracusa have staged spontaneous protests following a critical shortage of classrooms. The shortage was caused by the closure of the ex-Abela barracks in Ortigia for extensive modernization renovations, which are expected to last at least one year.

Although students were relocated to two other sites in the historic center, these spaces have proven insufficient for current enrollment levels. In response, university officials have inspected municipal and ecclesiastical properties for alternative spaces, while local councilors have formally questioned the mayor regarding plans for adequate study areas and long-term university development.
