Developments: 9. The Spanish film ‘La bola negra’, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (Los Javis), continues its significant commercial and critical success. Following recognition at the Cannes, San Sebastián, and Toronto film festivals—including a Best Director win at Cannes—the production has become a major cinematic phenomenon. In Spain, the film has surpassed 29.9 million euros in box office revenue, making it the fourth highest-grossing Spanish film in history. Its popularity coincided with the XXVII edition of the Fiesta del Cine, where it was the most-watched film, ranking as the fifth most-watched in the event’s history. Industry experts from Adicine suggest the film’s momentum could boost the market share of independent distributors from 12% to as high as 20% by the end of the year. In the United States, Netflix released box office data for the film’s limited debut in four theaters across New York and Los Angeles between October 16 and 18. The film earned $277,500, averaging approximately $69,375 per screen. This marks the highest per-screen average ever for a Spanish film and the second-highest for any non-English language film, trailing only 2019’s ‘Parasite’. Netflix plans to expand the film to 300 theaters on November 6. As Spain’s official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, the production remains a major awards contender. It has already received accolades such as a Best Direction award at the Critics Choice Latinx Film Awards and a Gotham Vanguard Tribute. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-24: Netflix releases box office data for 'La bola negra Netflix has disclosed box office earnings for ‘La bola negra’ in the US, marking its first release of such data in a decade. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/netflix-releases-box-office-data-for-la-bola-negra ### 2026-10-22: La Bola Negra achieves record-breaking box office success in Spain The Spanish film “La Bola Negra” has become a massive box office hit, earning nearly €30 million and boosting the independent film distribution sector. 8 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/la-bola-negra-approaches-30-million-euros-in-spanish-box-office ### 2026-10-19: Musician Guitarricadelafuente discusses role in La bola negra Musician Guitarricadelafuente discusses his transformative leading role in the successful film ‘La bola negra’, directed by Los Javis. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/musician-guitarricadelafuente-discusses-role-in-la-bola-negra ### 2026-10-18: La bola negra becomes highest-grossing Spanish film of 2026 Directed by Los Javis, ‘La bola negra’ is the highest-grossing Spanish film of 2026, surpassing 28 million euros and seeing successful limited release in the US via Netflix. 14 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/la-bola-negra-achieves-major-box-office-success-in-spain-and-the-us ### 2026-10-18: Netflix reports historic first box office grosses with ‘La Bola Negra’ Netflix reported its first-ever box office grosses with the debut of ‘La Bola Negra,’ a Spanish-language drama that achieved a record-setting per-screen average in limited U.S. release. 10 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/netflix-reports-historic-first-box-office-grosses-with-la-bola-negra ### 2026-10-17: Netflix to stream La Bola Negra, a potential Oscar contender The award-winning historical drama ‘La Bola Negra’ will stream on Netflix on November 2, emerging as a potential Oscar contender. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/netflix-to-stream-la-bola-negra-a-potential-oscar-contender ### 2026-10-09: La bola negra emerges as a global cinematic phenomenon The Spanish film ‘La bola negra’, directed by Los Javis, is gaining global momentum with a US release via Netflix and strong potential for multiple Oscar nominations. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/la-bola-negra-gains-momentum-for-2027-academy-awards ### 2026-10-06: La bola negra emerges as Oscar contender and box office hit The Spanish film ‘La bola negra’ has become a box office phenomenon and an Oscar contender, drawing massive audiences and spotlighting both established stars and new acting talents. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/la-bola-negra-emerges-as-oscar-contender-and-box-office-hit ### 2026-10-03: La bola negra finds success amid cinema closures in La Seu While the film ‘La bola negra’ finds commercial success, the community of La Seu faces the loss of its local cinema, Cinemes Guiu, sparking debate over the future of regional cultural spaces. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/la-bola-negra-finds-success-amid-cinema-closures-in-la-seu --- Cite as: Commercial success of La bola negra.
