Sudan has experienced significant population movements as people return from neighboring countries. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), over 1.1 million individuals entered Sudan through seven border points between January 2024 and August 2026. Approximately 80 percent of these returnees arrived from Egypt, with others coming from Chad, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. The IOM noted that 54 percent of these returns were due to “improved security conditions” in their home areas.

In the capital, Khartoum, approximately 2.7 million people have returned following the army's recapture of the city. However, these returnees face severe humanitarian challenges. Infrastructure is heavily damaged, leading to frequent outages of water and electricity, and critical shortages of essential medicines.

Safety remains a major risk; the United Nations has indicated that as little as 1% of the city's area may be free from danger due to unexploded shells and booby-traps. Economic instability and high costs continue to impact residents, prompting some families to relocate to Egypt or the United Arab Emirates.
