In Sulmona, the debate over the proposed merger of waste management companies Cogesa and Asm L’Aquila has intensified. Mayor Luca Tirabassi continues to advocate for territorial autonomy, proposing a legislative plan to divide the province into three sub-sectors to allow the Peligno territory to manage its specific needs independently.

Political opposition has sharpened. PD group leader Ornella La Civita has questioned the consistency of the mayor’s stance, noting that he previously supported decisions that undermined Cogesa’s stability.

Further tension has emerged regarding the Noce Mattei landfill. Following reports of odors in the area, center-left political groups have criticized the decision to expand the landfill, labeling it a sign of “political and managerial failure.” Critics argue the expansion is a consequence of long-term mismanagement rather than a proactive solution.

Opposition members are now calling for more competent governance focused on public interest, specifically advocating for improved Mechanical Biological Treatment (TMB) efficiency and Solid Recovered Fuel (CSS) production to reduce landfill volumes. They have demanded that the mayors of Sulmona and other member municipalities take responsibility and seek an immediate change in governance.
