Authorities in Ondo State, Nigeria, are investigating a suspected mass poisoning incident in the Odigbo Local Government Area. Reports indicate that residents died following the consumption of herbal liquids or locally produced alcoholic drinks, primarily in Odigbo town and Araromi Obu.

Health Commissioner Dr Banji Ajaka has confirmed 29 deaths linked to the suspected poisoning. The government has identified 60 suspected cases, with 27 individuals under medical observation and three receiving hospital treatment. The victims are predominantly male, with 95 per cent aged between 16 and 55. Reported symptoms include headaches, body pain, weakness, impaired vision, difficulty breathing, and altered consciousness.

The illnesses appear to be linked to the consumption of herbal alcoholic drinks in several communities, including Orita Odigbo, Araromi-Obu, Newtown, Odole, Okele, and Oniparaga. Authorities have collected 36 blood and urine samples, along with samples of the suspected products, for toxicological examination.

In response, the Odigbo Local Government Chairman and the Ondo State Government have implemented a temporary prohibition on the production, sale, and consumption of locally brewed alcoholic drinks and herbal alcoholic beverages within the area. Investigations are ongoing in partnership with security and regulatory agencies, and several suspects have been arrested.
