Sweden is experiencing shifts in its disability support and care infrastructure. Data shows that participation in daily activities under the LSS (Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments) nearly doubled between 1999 and 2024. While these programs offer social stimulation, concerns have been raised regarding their effectiveness in transitioning participants to the labor market, as only about 0.2 percent of participants move into long-term paid employment.

Socialstyrelsen attributes the rise in participants to increased autism diagnoses and a lack of labor market support for those transitioning from adapted upper secondary schools.

In response to social needs, new residential and specialized housing projects are underway. These include a care facility in Orminge, Nacka, operated by Ersta diakoni for elderly residents, and a new LSS housing project in Strängnäs designed to provide specialized apartments for individuals with disabilities.
