Sources: 3. Developments: 2. Sweden is preparing for upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Romania and Poland. The team continues to face defensive and roster challenges. While center-back Isak Hien remains sidelined until late October due to a hamstring tendon rupture, defender Gustaf Lagerbielke has also been ruled out of the Romania match following an inguinial injury. To address these absences, manager Graham Potter has made several squad adjustments. John Mellberg from RB Salzburg has been called up to cover for Lagerbielke. Additionally, Williot Swedberg from Celta Vigo and Paulos Abraham from Hammarby have joined the squad to replace Mattias Svanberg, Taha Abdi Ali, and Gustaf Nilsson. Patrik Walemark from Lech Poznań has also received his second senior call-up. The roster remains bolstered by experienced players including Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres, and Victor Nilsson Lindelöf. During the match against Romania at the Strawberry Arena, Sweden’s defensive issues intensified when defender Emil Holm sustained a serious injury. In the 59th minute, the 26-year-old Bologna player was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher after collapsing and clutching his right thigh following an acceleration. While initial impressions suggest a “possible biceps femoris lesion,” medical examinations are required to confirm the damage. The injury is considered significant for his club, Bologna, as it may sideline him for several months. Holm was replaced by Daniel Svensson during the match, at which point Sweden held a 2-1 lead. Sweden is scheduled to play Poland on September 28 in Solna. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-17: Sweden announces Nations League squad ahead of Romania matches Sweden coach Graham Potter has named his squad for the Nations League matches against Romania, featuring Taha Abdi Ali and marking the international retirement of goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/sweden-announces-nations-league-squad-ahead-of-romania-matches ### 2026-09-09: Sweden to face Romania without Isak Hien due to injury Sweden will face Romania in the Nations League without defender Isak Hien due to injury, while Romania's coach faces selection dilemmas regarding Ianis Hagi. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/sweden-to-face-romania-without-isak-hien-due-to-injury --- Cite as: Sweden national football team Nations League preparation.
