A study conducted by Umeå University at Norrland University Hospital has identified low vaccination rates for influenza and COVID-19 among high-risk adult patients in northern Sweden. The research, involving 600 patients, found influenza vaccination rates at 52 percent and COVID-19 rates at approximately 54 percent, which is lower than the average for the Västerbotten region.

Researchers determined that socioeconomic factors like income, education, or geography had minimal influence on vaccination decisions. Instead, lower uptake was linked to specific demographics and lifestyles, including men, younger patients, smokers, and individuals requiring home care services.

Further analysis indicated that patients with multiple chronic illnesses did not show higher vaccination rates than those with a single risk factor. Lead researcher Urban Johansson Kostenniemi suggested this reflects a lack of awareness regarding cumulative health risks. The study concludes that public health interventions should move away from broad initiatives toward targeted efforts that provide clearer information on multisystem disease risks and improve the practical delivery of multiple vaccines.
