Following government initiatives to reduce costs for commuters, Sweden has seen a rise in public transport ticket sales. In the Skåne region, Skånetrafiken reported selling over 131,000 monthly passes between July 1 and August 18, up from approximately 85,000 during the same period the previous year. Öresund monthly ticket sales also increased from roughly 13,000 to nearly 22,000. Mikael Thomasson of Skånetrafiken noted that while sales have risen, it is difficult to determine if this represents entirely new passengers or commuters switching from single tickets to monthly passes. Similar price reductions for monthly tickets were implemented in Östergötland via Östgötatrafiken. Recent data indicates that price cuts have led to even more dramatic surges in other regions: ticket sales doubled in Kalmar and Stockholm counties, increased by 150 percent in Uppsala, and saw a fourfold increase in Västra Götaland. To further encourage transit use, the Moderate party has proposed allowing employers to offer public transport cards as a tax-free benefit of up to 15,000 SEK per year. Despite increased usage, a Västtrafik annual survey found that eight out of ten respondents cite travel time as the primary factor in choosing transport, often resulting in car use despite a desire to reduce emissions. However, 70 percent of surveyed residents believe society should prioritize public transport investment, and 53 percent stated they would use transit more if employers provided ticket subsidies. As the price reduction remains in effect through December 31, 2026, K2, the National Knowledge Centre for Collective Mobility, has launched a nationwide research project to evaluate its impact.
