Sydney is undergoing a period of significant high-rise expansion and architectural development. The completion of the Atlassian tower, a 39-storey hybrid timber-steel-concrete structure reaching 272 metres, marks the topping out of the world’s tallest mixed-material timber building. This project is intended to anchor the new Tech Central precinct.

In addition to the Atlassian tower and the award-winning Lacebark residential complex, further large-scale developments have been proposed. These include the Castlereagh Place project, consisting of two 82-storey towers near Hyde Park, and a 26-storey tower above the heritage-listed Sherbourne Hotel. These developments have prompted discussions regarding high-rise congestion and its impact on the city’s traditional architectural contour and topography.
