The Sydney M1 metro rail line is nearing the completion of its south-west extension. Following a two-year closure that began in September 2024, the final 13-kilometre section between Sydenham and Bankstown is undergoing conversion, with commuters currently utilizing replacement buses.

As the project approaches its expected mid-October reopening, the network has experienced a significant surge in passenger demand. Recent figures show that several central stations have exceeded previous patronage forecasts. For instance, Martin Place station saw a 14 per cent increase in morning peak passengers, while Gadigal station reported patronage 43 per cent higher than original predictions.

This growth in metro usage has coincided with a decline in patronage at nearby heavy rail stations, such as North Sydney and St Leonards, as commuters transition to the metro system.
