Major changes are being implemented across the Sydney rail and metro networks to increase capacity and service frequency.

Sydney Trains is set to implement a significant timetable reconfiguration for the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra and the South Coast lines on November 15. These lines serve approximately 250,000 daily passengers, representing a quarter of the network’s patronage. The changes aim to reduce bottlenecks by utilizing dedicated express tracks between Arncliffe and Central Station. While morning peak city-bound services on the T4 line will increase in frequency—running every four minutes from Sutherland and every three minutes from Hurstville—some passengers may face longer journey times. Travel times for stations such as Waterfall, Heathcote, Engadine, and Loftus are expected to increase by up to 14 minutes during peak periods. Additionally, T4 services will now stop at Sydenham to facilitate transfers to the M1 metro line, while St Peters and Erskineville will be integrated into the T4 line.

Concurrently, the Sydney Southwest Metro is scheduled to begin service on October 30, following delays exceeding two years caused by technical challenges, including platform curvature issues. The 66-kilometre driverless line connects Tallawong to Bankstown, replacing the former T3 Bankstown Line. The service is expected to offer 50 per cent more passenger capacity, with peak frequency reaching every four minutes. The metro is also driving urban transformation, with new rezoning controls around nine stations intended to accommodate up to 59,500 additional homes in suburbs such as Bankstown, Punchbowl, and Wiley Park.
