In South and Southeast Asia, Myanmar has emerged as a central hub for a massive methamphetamine economy, particularly originating from Shan State. The Mekong region, including Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, serves as critical nodes for the storage and export of these substances. In South Asia, specific trends include the illicit circulation of pharmaceuticals like tramadol in Nepal and a rise in amphetamine-type stimulants in Bangladesh. In Sri Lanka, methamphetamine now accounts for over 35 percent of drug-related arrests.

Simultaneously, Central and West Asia are experiencing a transition toward synthetic substances alongside traditional poppy-based drugs. While authorities in Iran and Uzbekistan continue to intercept significant quantities of hashish and opium, there is a growing trend toward industrial and synthetic drugs. In Afghanistan, consumption patterns are changing as synthetic substances and the misuse of medical drugs rise, highlighted by the emergence of ‘Tablet K’, a substance containing inconsistent mixtures of methamphetamine, MDMA, and other stimulants or opioids.
