Retired Syrian officer Said Caviş has provided new details through an interview series with Al Majalla regarding the intelligence operations that led to the capture of Israeli spy Eli Cohen. Caviş, a signal intelligence specialist, described how monitoring Israeli military radio communications began during the 1956 Suez Crisis. This led to the creation of the ‘134 Signal Battalion’ (also referred to as the ‘134 Radio Secret Service’), a unit attached to the Signal Corps. Caviş detailed his role in developing the interception capabilities used near the village of Naaran in the Golan Heights. Further accounts reveal that after Cohen was identified, he was held under surveillance for six days in his Abu Rummaneh apartment while Syrian intelligence attempted to decode his communications. The deception was reportedly uncovered during an interrogation by then-Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, who concluded Cohen was Jewish after the spy failed to correctly recite the Fatiha Sura. Caviş noted that he opposed Cohen’s execution in hopes of using him for future intelligence exchanges, an action that resulted in Caviş serving 89 days in prison. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-04: Eli Cohen: New details emerge on the capture of the Israeli spy Retired Syrian officer Said Caviş has revealed new details on the capture of Israeli spy Eli Cohen, including how a failed recitation of the Fatiha Sura led to his exposure by President Hafez al-Assad. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/eli-cohen-new-details-emerge-on-the-capture-of-the-israeli-spy ### 2026-10-02: Said Caviş reveals details of operation to capture Eli Cohen Retired Syrian officer Said Caviş details his role in the signal intelligence operation that led to the capture of Israeli spy Eli Cohen, including the formation of the 134 Signal Battalion. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/said-cavi-reveals-details-of-operation-to-capture-eli-cohen --- Cite as: Syrian intelligence operations against Eli Cohen.
