A Damascus court has sentenced former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, following the conclusion of his family’s rule in December 2024. The convictions include crimes against humanity, war crimes, premeditated murder, and torture. Other high-ranking officials, including his brother Maher al-Assad and cousin Atef Najib, also received death sentences. Najib, a former security chief, was present in court and was convicted of murder and the torture and killing of children.

While the court has requested international arrest warrants, the enforcement of these sentences faces significant hurdles. Most of the convicted individuals are fugitives, with the Assad family reportedly seeking asylum in Russia. The Syrian administration currently lacks the political leverage to compel other countries to facilitate the extradition of the convicts.
