The death of Mohammed Ghumeira, a 29-year-old former White Helmets volunteer, has triggered investigations and public unrest in Syria. Ghumeira died from brain and gastrointestinal hemorrhaging after being detained for three days at the Haffeh police station in Latakia province following a theft allegation.

His family and officials reported that security officers ignored warnings regarding his hemophilia, a condition that impairs blood clotting. Following his death, protests erupted in Latakia, leading Interior Minister Anas Khattab to form a specialized committee to investigate the incident and detain seven individuals for questioning.

Subsequent findings by an investigation led by Maj. Gen. Ahmed Latouf determined that an interrogator slapped Ghumeira in the neck during questioning, contributing to a cerebral hemorrhage. As a result of these findings, investigator Ahmed Jawad has been referred to the public prosecution in Latakia.

The Ministry of Interior has since ordered expanded disciplinary investigations into other personnel, specifically Captain Ahmed Shaker al-Masri and investigator Omar Youssef, regarding negligence and the failure to document the detainee’s medical condition in official records. Syrian Minister of Justice Mazhar al-Wais stated that the case is now in the hands of the judiciary, emphasizing that there will be ‘no impunity for those found responsible.’ While rights groups have noted that abuses in detention centers persist, the incident continues to spark widespread public outrage across Syria.
