Following protests by civil rights groups in Taipei demanding stricter bans on drug and drunk driving, law enforcement agencies in Taiwan have intensified crackdowns on impaired motorists.

On August 1, groups including the Chinese Human Rights Association and the Chinese Republic Life Rights Equality Association staged a rally on Ketagalan Boulevard. Demonstrators demanded bans on drug- and drunk-driving offenses, better safety equipment for police, and judicial reforms to expand victim participation. The protest, supported by several Kuomintang legislators, highlighted rising incidents of drug-driving in New Taipei and drunk-driving in Taichung.

In response, police have launched successive waves of specialized operations. Enforcement has focused heavily on drug-impaired driving involving etomidate, which has been linked to several accidents in Taipei, Taichung, and Pingtung. Recent incidents include a multi-vehicle collision in Kaohsiung where a driver tested positive for amphetamines, ketamine, and benzodiazepines, and a dangerous pursuit in Taipei involving a motorcyclist using etomidate.

Authorities have also expanded investigations into narcotics trafficking. In Taipei and Taoyuan, a three-month investigation led to the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of 248 packs of drug-laced coffee, ketamine, etomidate, and a modified submachine gun. In a separate incident in Taipei’s Songshan District, a 50-year-old man surnamed Lin was arrested after ramming a police vehicle to evade a stop; a search of his residence yielded heroin, etomidate, amphetamines, and drug packaging tools.

To address transnational crime, the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office hosted the 2026 Cross-Border Drug Control Cooperation Forum, engaging partners from the United States, Japan, Singapore, and the Philippines to enhance intelligence sharing.
