This directive follows a December 2025 order, for which the court has granted a three-month extension. The legal proceedings stem from Tamil Nadu’s opposition to these central residential schools, primarily due to a conflict between the JNVs’ three-language policy, which includes Hindi, and the state’s two-language policy. During hearings, the Supreme Court emphasized the principle of “cooperative federalism” and advised the state to reconsider its stance on the Hindi language. Justice B.V. Nagarathna remarked that the state needs to “change its mindset” regarding Hindi instruction, stating, “It can't be that Hindi will not be taught in the soil of Tamil Nadu.” The court further observed that creating linguistic distance between cities like Chennai and Delhi is inappropriate and that the introduction of these schools should not diminish existing state educational standards. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-18: Supreme Court advises Tamil Nadu to reconsider stance on Hindi The Supreme Court of India advised the Tamil Nadu government to change its perspective on Hindi, stating that the state cannot completely reject its teaching and emphasizing national connectivity. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/supreme-court-advises-tamil-nadu-to-reconsider-stance-on-hindi ### 2026-09-17: Supreme Court directs Tamil Nadu to identify land for Navodaya Vidyalayas The Supreme Court of India has ordered Tamil Nadu to identify land for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in each district, urging the state to adopt a mindset of cooperative federalism regarding language policy. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/supreme-court-directs-tamil-nadu-to-identify-land-for-navodaya-vidyalayas --- Cite as: Tamil Nadu Navodaya Vidyalaya land dispute.
