Tanzania is advancing several power infrastructure projects to stabilize the national grid and support economic growth across various regions.

In the Simiyu and Mara regions, the Imalilo substation and a 110-kilometer transmission line from Shinyanga are under construction. Following previous difficulties with an original contractor, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has transitioned to using local experts for the project. As of mid-September 2026, the substation was reported to be 82 percent complete, with an expected completion timeline of one year.

Simultaneously, infrastructure development is progressing in the Rukwa and Katavi regions. The Malangali substation in Rukwa, constructed by the Chinese firm TBEA, reached 85.17 percent completion by mid-October 2026, with testing and full completion anticipated in November 2026. In Katavi, TANESCO aims to increase electricity capacity in Mpanda to 80 megawatts by December 1, 2026, through the installation of a new 150 MVA transformer to meet peak demand and provide a surplus for local industry.
