During the Sixth Women in Leadership Forum in Dar es Salaam, Tanzanian and Zanzibari officials addressed the necessity of increasing female representation in senior roles. Officials emphasized that achieving gender equality requires more than just recruitment; it requires addressing systemic barriers such as workplace culture, discrimination, and sexual harassment.

Zanzibari Minister Dr. Riziki Pembe Juma and Minister Dr. Saada Salum Mkuya highlighted the importance of capacity-building and transparent institutional procedures. These efforts are aligned with Tanzania’s National Development Vision 2050, which aims for 50 percent female representation in leadership positions.

Subsequent discussions focused on the retention of women in these roles. Dr. Juma noted that representation is insufficient if women are forced out of senior positions by unequal responsibilities or bias. In Zanzibar, women currently occupy 33 percent of ministerial positions and 38 percent of principal secretary roles. Additionally, Deputy Minister Regina Qwaray advocated for merit-based opportunities and mentorship to ensure long-term success for women in decision-making roles.
